ELECTION OF THE EXECUTIVE COMMITTEE
Introduction to the Candidates

The 53rd Congress of LMHI is accompanied by a Triennial Assembly of the Liga membership and by meetings of the International Council. The new National Vice Presidents attending the meeting will have been elected by their national association(s); however, the members of the LMHI Executive Committee will be elected in Amsterdam. The following individuals have presented themselves as candidates for the respective offices of the Executive Committee.

Candidate for President
Dr. Jacques Pierre Joseph Arthur Louis Imberechts (Belgium)

Jacques Pierre Joseph Arthur Louis Imberechts - On 07 August 1930, Dr. Imberechts was born in Gembloux, Belgium, a small town of 7,000 inhabitants at that time. He is the oldest son of the nine children of Arthur Constant Joseph Imberechts, a general practitioner, who specialized in Dentistry and Stomatology, and, during World War II, shifted his practice and specialized in General Surgery. In the 50's, the senior Imberechts eventually founded a clinic in Gembloux, a small one, with only 40 beds including the maternity. At that time, the general practitioners were delivering the babies at home and had started to go to a maternity for it. His mother, Thérèse Grootaers is the daughter of Ludovic Grootaers, a germanic philologist who made a Dutch-French dictionary.

Dr. Imberechts grew up in this small town Gembloux and went to grammar school there until the age of 10 years. At ten years old, he went to a Jesuit college in Godinne, studying the Ancient Humanities, Greek and Latin section. The college is near to the Meuse River between Namur and Dinant. Students only returned home for All Saints, Christmas, Carnaval, Eastern and summer vacations.

At the age of 14, Dr. Imberechts went to Basse-Wavre College where his brothers were and finished his secondary school there in 1955.

Dr. Imberechts spent one year commuting by train from Gembloux to Namur (8 kilometers) for a preparatory year in Natural and Medical Sciences at the Jesuit Faculty Notre-Dame de la Paix.

From 1956 until 1966, he stayed in Louvain, at his mother's grandmother's house and studied Medicine at the Catholic University of Louvain, where he dedicated his free time to Anatomo-Pathology, politics, founded the International Center for Foreign Students, studied Philosophy, and learned different languages thanks to his different friends from the USA, Latin-America and Italy.

In 1966, he married Simonne Van Binst, a teacher in French and Philosophy. She died from a brain cancer in 1988.

Dr. Imberechts was preparing an internship in Biology and Anatomo-Pathology when he was hired by Parke-Davis and Co., as parttime medical director of their Benelux branch and was also in charge of the phase IV trials in clinical investigation for the new products. This explains his interest in Pharmacology.

Meanwhile, he was also parttime assistant in Anatomo-Pathology at the Brugmann Hospital of the University of Brussels. But he had already met Dr. Jean Mouffe and helped him with the dissections of the calf's embryos that he was using for treatments of Cellulotherapy, the technique started by Dr. Niehans in Montreux-Switzerland. Dr. Jean Mouffe was also an homœopathic physician and from him he received the first information about homœopathy already in 1965.

Since then, Dr. Imberechts followed the teaching of the Belgian School for Homœopathy and he presented a dissertation on the Snake Venoms to become a member of the Royal Society for Homœopathy in 1968.

Dr. Imberechts met Dr. Pierre Schmidt at the Liga Congress in Vichy in 1970. Thereafter, he spent one weekend a month, almost every month to Genève, working with Dr. Pierre Schmidt until 1977. It is at Dr. Schmidt's surgery that he met Dr. Tomas Paschero and in 1972, during the Congress of the Liga in Brussels he met Dr. Proceso Sanchez Ortega. Dr. Imberechts was almost the only one of the participants who was fluent in Spanish.

Dr. Charles Kennedy and Dr. Imberechts met in the 70's; they met several times a year since, with the courses at the Faculty of Homoeopathy in London and in the British study group and in the annual multigroup Meetings of Homeopathia Europea and Internationalis.

From 1972, he spent several weeks in Mexico every year until 1982, working with Dr. Proceso Sanchez Ortega and his team.

Dr. Imberechts has attended all the Liga Congresses since 1970 until 1996, except the Buenos Aires in 1971, Vienna 1973 and USA 1974 ones.

With Dr. Albert Pladys from La Panne, Belgium, he founded in 1973, the first study group that later developed into several study groups in Europe and USA and South America becoming Homoeopathia Europea and, in 1984, Homoeopathia Internationalis.

Dr. Imberechts met Dr. Donald Foubister in the British Congress in Stirling-Scotland in 1975 and worked with him in several meetings a year until the latter's death in 1987. In the Liga Congress in New Delhi, 1977, Dr. Imberechts was nominated Secretary for Education after Dr. Spiros Garzonis, and he stayed in that job until 1982 (Brighton Congress).

He became Deputy National Vice-President for Belgium in Athens 1976 and Belgium National Vice-President in 1979 (Hamburg Congress).

In 1978 he became a member of Academia Médico-Homoeopathic de Barcelona. In London he became a member of the Homoeopathic Faculty of the United Kingdom and in 1986 he was nominated a Fellow of the Faculty of Homoeopathy. Then, in 1984, he became a corresponding member of the American Institute of Homeopathy. In 1990, Dr. Imberechts was one of the founders of the European Committee for Homoeopathy, he was a general coordinator of its different sub-committees, and was nominated its president in 1996.

Dr. Imberechts was nominated Prime Vice President of LMHI in New Delhi Liga Congress in 1995.

Candidate for Prime Vice President
Carles Amengual i Vicens (Spain)

Born on 05 November 1956 in Selva, Mallorca, a village of 1300 inhabitants; mountains, blue sky, plants and animals were his world. The second of three children, and the son of Pere Amengual, a general practitioner who specialized in Neurology and Psychiatry and grand son of Jaume Amengual, a pharmacist, Dr. Carles Amengual has in his family uncles and cousins who are physicians and pharmacists: this is the origin of his early interest in that field.

He grew up in this village until the age of 10 years, and then he went to Palma, to the Franciscan college for middle and high school. At the age of 16, he started medicine at the University of Barcelona. It was such a nice time in this wonderful city! During his medical studies, he decided to study acupuncture after knowing of it by a lecture by Felix Mann, who had written a book on the subject . His first contact with homeopathy was through the Mario Marzetti book, and the philosophy of this old medicine was a great discovery for him, as well as that of medicinal plants, because of the influence of pharmacy on his family.

So, after completing his internship at the Palma Hospital and finishing his medical degree, he went to the China Medical College in Taiwan where he spent three years (1979-1982) studying Chinese Medicine. Then he spent several months at the Department of Botany of Los Baños University (Philippines) with Prof. Ludiyina S. de Padua.

When he returned, he licensed in Biological Sciences at the University of the Balearic Islands (1987) and later he obtained the specialty in Pharmaceutical Botany at the School of Pharmacy of the University of Pisa, Italy (1989).

In 1983 he married Damiana Sastre, a teacher and nurse, and they have three daughters: Damiana, Maria Lara and Maria de Lluc. They live in an old house full of plants and animals. He has been a vegetarian since the age of 23, and his physical-mind (all is one!) activities are martial arts (blue belt Aikido and black belt Fung-Fu) and long distance running.

After his studies at the Academia Médico Homeopatica de Barcelona, and several stays at the faculty of Homoeopathy of London, he spent a year at the Instituto de Estudios Superiores de Oaxaca, Mexico, with Dr. Proceso Sanchez Ortega and his team. There he did his clinical practice mostly with Dr. Roberto Lopez Hernandez.

When he returned to his country, he was elected LMHI Vice President for Spain in 1988 at the Congress in Athens until 1994. In 1990, he was one of the founders of the European Committee for Homoeopathy, and he was coordinator of the Subcommittee of Education for three years. In 1990, he served as president of the 45th LMHI Congress in Barcelona, and, in 1991, he became the president of the Academia Médico Homeopatica de Barcelona until today. As the Academic Director of the Postgraduate Homœopathic Diploma of the Fundacio Bosch i Gimpera/University of Barcelona, he is teaching Materia Medica and Pharmacognosy there since 1992.

He has written about several subjects: plants and poetry, minerals and medicine, balearic medicinal plants, pharmacognosy and homœopathic materia medica, and he is doing regular language translations (books and seminars which, he states, is a "nice way of learning!"). In 1991 and 1992, he was with the team of Homoeopaths Without Borders at the Cholera epidemics in Peru.

He has been a medical adviser with Greenpeace for several years. He is a founding member of the group Scientists Against Incineration (because the enormous bad effects on life of waste combustion), a movement headed by Dr. Paul Connet (USA), Dr. Barry Commoner (USA) and Dr. Otmar Wassermann (Germany).

He has planned to make a non-profit foundation for a Medicinal Botanical Garden and Research Center (he hopes the funds will arrive one day!). A Collection-Museum of Pharmacy is already going on, with three pharmacies from 1868, 1899 and 1950.

He is now working on his Ph.D. at the university in a research on a 1778 Latin work of the Pharmacopœia Maloricensis, translating it into catalan language.

In his clinical practice he has a great interest in Pediatrics and terminal care patients: the two edges of the never ending cirlce of life.

He was elected General Secretary of LMHI in New Delhi Congress 1995.

Candidate for Prime General Secretary
Dr. Ulrich Fischer (Germany)

Ulrich D. Fischer, M.D. was born on 14 July 1954 In a small village near Stuttgart, Germany. Due to his homeopathic veterinarian father, he was early in touch with Principles of Homoeopathy, growing up between horses, cows, pigs and dogs, holding bottles of Nux vomica, Pulsatilla and Sulfur. There did not exist any other type of medicine neither for his brothers and sisters, nor his father's patients. After finishing high school at the International boarding school of Salem, he decided to study medicine. During the time he had to wait for the registration at the Medical University, he started studying Homoeopathy with Dr. Voegell of Switzerland, Prof. Dr. Dorcsi of Vienna, and Dr. Eichelberger of Munich.

Due to the unsatisfying conditions at the Medical Universities in Germany at that time, he decided to learn Spanish and traveled to Mexico. Here he applied and was accepted, then studied and earned his degree in Medicine at the Universidad Metropolitana in Mexico City (1978 -1983). Also during the same time, he studied several years at the postgraduate school Homeopatia de Mexico of Dr. P. Sánchez Ortega. Thereafter, he stayed on as a teacher at Homeopatia de Mexico, while balancing his private family practice and his work in the slum projects "women's self help health program", in Mexico City.

Hahnemann once proclaimed after his clinical studies in Vienna, that everything he could call doctor in himself was due to his teachers In Vienna. Like Hahnemann, Dr. Fischer, too, holds great respect and enduring ties to his teachers, mentors and friends in Mexico. His years in Mexico, not only included extensive exchange and studies there, but also gave opportunities to get to know other very important teachers in South America, like P. Paschero, F. Risquez, A. Masi and Eizayaga.

Since his return from Mexico, he has a homoeopathic family practice In Freiburg. Since 1984, he has been a teacher in the 3 year program in homeopathy for medical doctors. For 10 years, he has had the official teaching position for homeopathy at the Pharmaceutical Institute at the University in Freiburg.

S. Hahnemann's studies about the Chronic Miasms and their later analysis or lnterpretation by authors like J. T. Kent, J. H. Allen and C. V. Boenninghausen are of Dr. Fischer's special interest. With this in mind, he has given several courses in Germany, Austria, India, and Italy. He has also published different articles in the Allgemeine Homöopathische Zeitung and the Zeltschrift für Klassische Homöopathie under these interests.

In 1991 he was elected LMHI Vice President for Germany and In 1990 he was one of the founders of the European Committee for Homoeopathy and still represents Germany In the Subcommittee for Politics and Education. Since 1997, he has been a member of the board of the German Association of Homoeopathic Physicians.

The outcome of an International conference, with Dr. Ortega and Dr. Dorsel in Mexico 1985 was meeting his wife Anita, an American teaching nurse. They share their house In the Black Forrest with their 2 sons Lukas now 10 and Dominik 8. His other interests are studying philosophy, riding a mountain bike, skiing with his sons and, when time allows, mastering his golf swing.

Candidate for Treasurer
Dr. Ton Nicolai (The Netherlands)

Ton Nicolai was born on 2nd September 1947 in Amsterdam and grew up in Haarlem. He is happily married with two children. His wife is a self-employed management consultant.

Inquiring as to the education of this distinguished physician, one learns that after high school he studied medicine at the Leiden University and became an MD. At the age of 24 he started working as a General Practitioner and was continued working as such for eleven years. While at the university he got the impression that doctors were really able to cure people, anti-hypertensive drugs for people with hypertension, anti-inflammatory drugs for people with rheumatoid arthritis etc. This idea turned out to be rather naive (but nobody had told him the contrary!). When he started working as a General Practitioner, he was completely astounded by the fact that so many patients could not be cured and were supposed to take medicines for years or for ever, as mere palliatives!

Immediately, he started to look for other therapeutic options. It was 1978, President Nixon was in China, Foreign Affairs Minister Henry Kissinger was operated upon under acupuncture anaesthesia. Acupuncture was in the air; so, he studied acupuncture. In the world of 'alternative' doctors he met many colleagues searching for other ways of treatment and cure. Then he discovered homeopathy, chiropraxis, naturopathy, psychic healing etc.

In the seventies there were not yet any full-blown homeopathic training facilities in the Netherlands. He studied from the books and attended numerous seminars and courses, at home and abroad, with George Vithoulkas, Roger Morrison, Bill Gray, Alphons Geukens, Rajan Sankaran, Jan Scholten and Massimo Mangialavori, among others.

Since 1988, he has been working as a full-time consultant homeopathic doctor. He decided to stop practising acupuncture as he was not able to practice both homeopathy and acupuncture at a high level and he prefers homeopathy to acupuncture because homeopathic philosophy is closer to his own way of thinking.

Dr. Nicolai has participated in quite a lot of workshops on awareness, personal growth, interactive skills in the doctor-patient relationship, etc. This has greatly facilitated his ability to create an atmosphere in which a patient easily will open up, to sense what a patient is feeling and thinking and how a patient perceives the world. Hahnemann knew already that the patient's affective state is often decisive for the choice of a particular homeopathic remedy (§ 211, Organon).

Among his other interests are mind-body health, healing in general, religion, languages, and scuba diving.

Until recently he served for six years on the Board of the Netherlands Homeopathic Medical Association. Since 1994, he has been the political co-ordinator of the European Committee for Homeopathy (ECH) and, since 1996, he has served as the ECH Secretary.

In 1990 Dr. Nicolai entered the LMHI International Council as the National Vice-President for the Netherlands. He has been the LMHI Treasurer since 1994.

Dr. Robert van Haselen (United Kingdom)

Dr. Robert van Haselen qualified in Health Sciences and complementary medicine. He worked in private practice for eight years, practicing mainly classical homeopathy. After completing a MSc in Clinical Epidemiology in 1990, he started dedicating himself completely to clinical research and worked for five years as Head of Clinical Research at VSM Geneesmiddelen, a leading Dutch homeopathic pharmaceutical company. During this time he conducted/was involved in more than 10 clinical trials (including studies involving classical homeopathy), in homeopathic drug provings and also in (phase 4) Post Marketing Surveillance studies.

During the past 10 years he developed and tested methodologies for improving the efficacy of diagnosis in homeopathy.

During the past 8 years he worked and published on homeopathic data collection projects for the Bristol, Glasgow and Royal London Homeopathic Hospitals.

In November 1995, he emigrated to the UK and was appointed Deputy Director of Research at the Royal London Homeopathic Hospital (RLHH) where he works at present on a parttime basis. During the past two years, he has (among others) been investigating the cost-effectiveness of homeopathy and he conducted a study on constitutional types involving 450 patients treated at the RLHH. He was also one of the key organizers of one of the largest dedicated homeopathic research conferences, hosted by the RLHH in January 1997 (145 attendants from 26 countries).

He also works as an Independent Research Consultant, mainly for the homeopathic industry. So far, he has done work for VSM Geneesmiddelen (The Netherlands), DHU (Germany), Nelsons and Weleda (UK).

He was elected coordinator of the Clinical Research Subcommittee of the European Committee of Homeopathy in January 1997.

He has been (and still is) actively publishing in homeopathic and conventional peer reviewed medical journals.

Candidate for General Secretary for Veterinarians
Dr. Sergio Canello (Italy)

Dott. Sergio Canello graduated at the University of Milano in 1974, and there also graduated in Clinic of Pet's Diseases in 1979. He has finished the first biennial course of homeopathy, held by dr. Franco del Francia in Florence in 1982/83, has taught for some years at the International Superior School of Cortona, and, since 1985, has been a teacher and director of the veterinary Section of the private homeopathic School of Verona.

He regularly writes on the school's paper published on "Medicina Naturale", edited by "Tecniche Nuove." His book of veterinary homeopathy titled Homeopathic theory and methodology in veterinary medicine was published in 1995, edited by lpsa, in Palermo. He is finishing other two books: A Veterinary Repertory and A Medic Veterinary Subject of First Aid. This last book, after an agreement with Archibel S.A., is just about to become part of Radar. He has practised homeopathy since 1982 in the following fields: pets, horses, zoo animals and zootechny. In matters of chicken and turkey brewing, he works as a homeopathic consultant in a big farm in the North of Italy. One of these experiments, in co-operation with Dr. Patrizio Luisetto, has been published on n. 5 "Informatore Zootecnico" on March 1993. One other, certainly more important, has been finished in co-operation with the Radiology Institute of Padua University. He is doing several ulterior experiments on a big farm of laying hens in Vicenza: first results suggest the possibility of an important intervention on the problems of all the laying hens in an effective and easy way.

One of his researches, started 20 years ago, has underlined the appearance of a great deal of new pathologies in dogs and cats that live on industrial meat. This kind of pathological phenomena are attributable at the presence to chemical residuals on industrial meat, in particular in pork and chicken meat. His work, titled "Clinic veterinary ecology - S.R.A."', has been published, in April 1995, on the Bulletin of A.I.V.P.A. (Associazione ltaliana Veterinari Piccoli Animali). This work also can have a very strong importance on homeopathy. The scientific demonstration that the use of chemical molecules on the industrial rising provokes a real pathological syndrome in dogs and cats that live on this, so with possible consequences also on the health of the people that live on the same food, is in the position to determine a complete revolution on industrial farms, with evident advantages for homeopathic therapies. Since more than a 3 years, different homeopathic treatments have been used in all important zootechnical groups on the turkeys and rabbits, with really interesting results. All the information regarding these results is available. One of that works about chickens has been presented at the International Homeopathy Congress carried out in October 1995 in Oaxaca, Mexico. Another work about turkeys has been presented in Capri in 1996, during the Liga Homeopathic Congress.

He is member of FIAMO's scientific Committee (Italian Federation Associations Homeopathic Doctors).

He has been officially invited, either last year or this, at the University of Padua, in order to carry out meetings on homeopathy.
